eurospace | It is less than two weeks to the very last space shuttle launch. Will there be any pictorial postmarkers at KSC or Houston for this event? I have not yet seen anything published in the "Postal Bulletin", and I have not heard anything from Ken Havekotte either. Does anybody know? |
Apollo-Soyuz | The Postal Service will eventually publicize the cancels to be used for the last space shuttle flight. They will probably extend the deadline to send covers. They have done this in the past. |
Apollo-Soyuz | There was no mention in the latest Postal Bulletin of any cancels commemorating the final shuttle flight. |
onesmallstep | What a shame! Could have done some from KSC, Houston & Downey, CA.. |
Apollo-Soyuz | There could be cancels after the fact. The postal service has done this in the past announcing cancels after the fact allowing up to 60 days to get the cancel. Ken Havekotte my be able to elaborate on this. |
Ken Havekotte | A special hand-pictorial postmark had been discussed and initially planned for use at the Kennedy Space Center months ago by my firm. It was decided, however, for a number of reasons not to have a final shuttle flight cancellation for launch and landing of Atlantis on Mission STS-135 here at Kennedy.

Apollo-Soyuz | I think it is a shame no commemoration of the final shuttle flight was done. |
DChudwin | It is not too late to send covers for an STS-135 landing postmark with the standard KSC cancels. Send stamped envelopes with a return self-addressed stamped envelope for their return to: STS-135 Landing Cancel c/o Postmaster Kennedy Space Center FL 32815-9998 I just sent some covers for double cancels including April 12, 1981 STS-1 launch cover. |
Apollo-Soyuz | Can anybody tell me if the pictorial cancels shown were ever publicized? They look like official pictorial cancels approved by the Postal Service. I searched for information and found none. Will we be able to request these cancels? In the past when a cancel was not announced, the postal service extended the deadline to obtain the cancels. I emailed Ken Havekotte about this as I just received a cover order from him with these cancels. I wanted to send a batch of shuttle covers to get cancelled with these cancels as the shuttle is retired. |
Apollo-Soyuz | In my opinion, I think the postal service should extend the deadline 30-60 days due to no announcement about the use of the cancels. They obviously were used. |
eurospace | The French dealer of space covers and stamps Lollini from Nice is now also offering these covers in his monthly sales list. If you check the scans presented in the previous message carefully, you'll find that the recipients address on these covers is Lollini's. I have e-mailed him asking a number of questions about these cancels. The postmarker from Edwards is particularly strange: Atlantis did not land there. It landed at the Kennedy Space Center.

onesmallstep | I finally received my STS-135/Atlantis landing cover, cancelled at Houston, TX and franked with one of Bob McCall's 1981 shuttle stamps and the new Shepard issue. I was pleasantly surprised that they used an International Space Station pictorial postmark. |
